Strong Earthquake Hits Off The Coast Of Chile, Tsunami Advisory For Hawaii

A strong earthquake struck off the coast of Chile in the Pacific Ocean earlier today.

According to CBS News, there is also a tsunami alert for the whole of Chile’s coast.

Hawaii is not expected to be impacted by a strong tsunami but the entire state is currently under a tsunami advisory.

According to the National Weather Service, the earthquake was a magnitude 8.3.

“Based on all available data, a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter,” Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement.”

While the threat is not expected to seriously impact Hawaii, other Pacific islands could be in more danger.

ElSalvador.com is reporting flood waters reaching a main roadway in the coastal city of Concon in Chile.

A video posted on Youtube also seems to show similar flooding issues in Concon.

Hawaiian News Now reports that the earliest that a tsunami could impact Hawaii is 3:11 AM HST.

Breaking: 8.8 Million People Received Health Insurance Last Year

In a webcast and press release Wednesday morning, the US Census Bureau announced that 8.8 million Americans received health insurance last year- dropping the number of uninsured Americans to around 33 million people.

“The percentage of people without health insurance coverage for the entire 2014 calendar year was 10.4 percent, down from 13.3 percent in 2013,” A government press release said.

The data was first reported by the New York Times.

One Dead At Delta State University Shooting, Shooter Still At Large

UPDATED 1:56 P.M.

The Bolivar County Coroner’s office in Mississippi identified the victim shot at Delta State University as Professor Ethan A. Schmidt, according to the personal Twitter account of Jake Hyman, a CBS Radio News reporter. Hyman reports that Schmidt was a professor of American History at the university.

  UPDATED 1:50 P.M. A gunman shot and killed a professor at Delta State University in Mississippi on Monday. The campus remains on lockdown, asking those on campus to stay indoors away from windows as the shooter remains at large. CNN reports that the victim was male and was in his office at the time of the shooting. Delta State is a small college (just over 3,000 undergrad students) and is located in Cleveland, Mississippi, just on the Mississippi-Arkansas border.

Australia will get its fourth prime minister in three years after a shocking late night vote ended the rule of Tony Abbott as leader of the governing center-right Liberal Party.

According to the BBC, Abbott will be replaced as Prime Minister by the more moderate Malcolm Turnbull.

Turnbull defeated Abbott 54 votes to 44 in a party room vote.

Turnbull will become prime minister after Abbott sends his resignation letter to the governor-general.

In a statement made earlier in the day, Turnbull made clear his intentions to challenge Abbott.

“Now this is not a decision that anyone could take lightly. I have consulted with many, many colleagues; many Australians; many of our supporters, in every walk of life. And this course of action has been urged on me by many people over a long period of time,” Turnbull said.  “It is clear enough that the Government is not successful in providing the economic leadership that we need. It is not the fault of individual ministers, ultimately the Prime Minister has not been capable of providing the economic leadership our nation needs; he has not been capable of providing the economic confidence that business needs.”

Abbott seemed flat-footed in his response to the snap leadership election, as many in his team did not even acknowledge it would happen until hours before the final vote took place.

Abbott has been prime minister since 2013.

A Tweet sent earlier in the day on September 14 showed how unprepared Abbott was for the vote:

Turnbull is more progressive than Abbott and many others in the Liberal Party. He supports gay marriage, believes in the existence of climate change.

Al Gore, the former Vice President of the United States and Democratic Party candidate for President in 2000 seemed to celebrate the change of Australian leadership in a Tweet.

Some in the Australian press are having fun with the situation. The right leaning Herald Sun had to change their front page after the results were announced. 

Even Virgin Group CEO Richard Branson signaled his support for Turnbull after the vote.

Martyr No More: Kentucky Clerk To Be Released From Jail Today

NBC News is reporting that Kim Davis, the Kentucky Clerk who refused to marry gay couples will be released from jail.

The New York Times’ Alan Blinder is also reporting that Davis will be released.

Same-sex marriage was legalized in the whole of the United States in a high profile Supreme Court case in June.

Judge Orders Jail To Kentucky Clerk Who Denied Same-Sex Marriage Licenses

A Kentucky clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples was taken into custody for contempt of court earlier today.

“The idea of natural law superceding this court’s authority would be a dangerous precedent indeed,” U.S. District Judge David L. Bunning told Davis, according to the Washington Post’s report.

Rown County clerk Kim Davis harbored national notoriety over her refusal to comply with the Supreme Court order to allow same-sex marriage licenses. Davis said that issuing same-sex marriage licenses would violate her faith, so she ordered her employees to deny all marriage licenses, whether they were same-sex or not.

Her supporters applauded her decision, viewing the federal government’s legalization of same-sex marriage a violation of freedom of religion. However, others viewed her defiance as a violation of fundamental human rights.

In February, Davis issued a marriage license to a transgender couple despite refusing to marry same-sex couples. Camryn and Alexis Colen, who identify as pansexual, had their marriage license issued on February 26 by Davis, who did not ask for Camryn’s birth certificate. Camryn, a transgender man, still has female marked on his birth certificate.

Legislative leaders in Kentucky called for a compromise for same-sex couples to be married in Rowan County without asking Davis to compromise her faith, and not hold her in contempt until they found a resolution.

It is not immediately clear how long Davis will spend in jail.

Wall Street: Stocks Bounce Back After Brutal Tuesday Sell Off

3:10 PM- Stocks are up across the board about 1%. Dow up around 190 points (+1.17%), NASDAQ up around 70 points (1.52%).

9:35 AM- The Dow Jones Industrial Average sits over 200 points above where it started as trading got off to a hot start on Wall Street. The rebound comes right after a rough Tuesday on the street where stocks lost over 400 points.

The NASDAQ is also up this morning- around 60 points (a 1.30 percent positive change).
