Woah. You Have To Read What Christiane Amanpour Had To Say About Press Coverage Of Trump

Christiane Amanpour is one of the most respected and well-known journalists in the world.

Her reporting is an impressive mix of depth and clarity, and it has been for decades.

As a result, when Amanpour speaks out on a topic, people in the media tend to listen.

That is why her speech at the recent International Press Freedom Awards was powerful.

In short, Amanpour believes that many in the media treated Donald Trump differently than Hillary Clinton during the general election.

But more troubling than that is what she had to say about her fears of press freedoms being taken away in the United States.

Citing her experience in reporting on crackdowns of journalists by despotic regimes from around the world, Amanpour said that “First the media is accused of inciting, then sympathizing, then associating–until they suddenly find themselves accused of being full-fledged terrorists and subversives. Then they end up in handcuffs, in cages, in kangaroo courts, in prison–and then who knows?”

“I never in a million years thought I would be up here on stage appealing for the freedom and safety of American journalists at home,” Amanpour said in the speech. “I actually hoped that once president-elect, all that that would change, and I still do. But I was chilled when the first tweet after the election was about “professional protesters incited by the media.”

She went on. Oh boy, did she go on.

Here is the full text of Amanpour’s speech. You really should take a couple minutes to read the whole thing:

“I never in a million years thought I would be up here on stage appealing for the freedom and safety of American journalists at home.

Ladies and gentlemen, I added the bits from candidate Trump as a reminder of the peril we face.

I actually hoped that once president-elect, all that that would change, and I still do.

But I was chilled when the first tweet after the election was about “professional protesters incited by the media.”

He walked back the part about the protesters but not the part about the media.

We are not there but postcard from the world: this is how it goes with authoritarians like Sisi, Erdoğan, Putin, the Ayatollahs, Duterte, et al.

As all the international journalists we honor in this room tonight and every year know only too well:

First the media is accused of inciting, then sympathizing, then associating–until they suddenly find themselves accused of being full-fledged terrorists and subversives.

Then they end up in handcuffs, in cages, in kangaroo courts, in prison–and then who knows?

Just to say, Erdoğan has just told my Israeli colleague Ilana Dayan that he cannot understand why anyone’s protesting in America, it must mean they don’t accept–or understand–democracy! And he thinks America, like all great countries, needs a strongman to get things done!

A great America requires a great and free and safe press.

So this above all is an appeal to protect journalism itself.

Recommit to robust fact-based reporting without fear or favor–on the issues.

Don’t stand for being labelled crooked or lying or failing

Do stand up together–for divided we will all fall.

The historian Simon Schama, in the house tonight, told me early on that this was not just another election, and we cannot treat it as one.

And he says if ever there’s a time to celebrate, honor, protect, and mobilize for press freedom and basic good journalism, it’s now.

At the start of this campaign, a network news president said this phenomenon may not be good for America but damn good for us.

During an interview on my program this summer, the film-maker and historian Ken Burns asked me what would Edward R. Murrow do?

First, like many people watching where I was overseas, I admit I was shocked by the exceptionally high bar put before one candidate and the exceptionally low bar put before the other candidate.

It appeared much of the media got itself into knots trying to differentiate between balance, objectivity, neutrality, and crucially, truth.

We cannot continue the old paradigm–let’s say like over global warming, where 99.9 percent of the empirical scientific evidence is given equal play with the tiny minority of deniers.

I learned long ago, covering the ethnic cleansing and genocide in Bosnia, never to equate victim with aggressor, never to create a false moral or factual equivalence, because then you are an accomplice to the most unspeakable crimes and consequences.

I believe in being truthful, not neutral. And I believe we must stop banalizing the truth.

And we have to be prepared to fight especially hard for the truth in a world where the Oxford English Dictionary just announced its word of 2016: post-truth.

We have to accept that we’ve had our lunch handed to us by the very same social media that we’ve so slavishly been devoted to.

The winning candidate did a savvy end run around us and used it to go straight to the people. Combined with the most incredible development ever–the tsunami of fake news sites–aka lies–that somehow people could not, would not, recognize, fact check, or disregard.

One of the main writers of these false articles–these lies–says people are getting dumber, just passing fake reports around without fact checking. We need to ask whether technology has finally outpaced our human ability to keep up.

Facebook needs to step up

Advertisers need to boycott the lying sites.

Wael Ghonim, one of the fathers of the Arab Spring, dubbed the social media revolution, now says:

“The same medium that so effectively transmits a howling message of change also appears to undermine the ability to make it. Social media amplifies the human tendency to bind with one’s own kind. It tends to reduce complex social challenges to mobilizing slogans that reverberate in echo chambers of the like-minded rather than engage in persuasion, dialogue, and the reach for consensus. Hate speech and untruths appear alongside good intentions and truths.”

I feel that we face an existential crisis, a threat to the very relevance and usefulness of our profession.

Now, more than ever, we need to commit to real reporting across a real nation, a real world in which journalism and democracy are in mortal peril, including by foreign powers like Russia paying to churn out and place false news, and hacking into democratic systems here and allegedly in upcoming crucial German and French elections too.

A quick anecdote from out there: in the 1997 Iranian elections, the reform candidate won and the establishment ayatollahs were caught totally off guard. One of them asked me later how I was so sure and when did I know that Khatami was going to win. I told him, as soon as I got on the ground and started talking to people! Just saying.

We must also fight against a post-values world.

And let me hit back at this elitist backlash we’re all bending over backwards to accommodate.

Since when were American values elitist values? They are not left or right values. They are not rich or poor values, not the forgotten-man values.

Like many foreigners I have learned they are universal. They are the values of every American from the humblest to the most exalted. They form the very fundamental foundation of the United States and are the basis of America’s global leadership. They are brand America. They are America’s greatest export and gift to the world.

So yes, like so many around the world, I was shocked–very few ever imagined that so many Americans conducting their sacred duty in the sanctity of the voting booth, with their secret ballot, would be angry enough to ignore the wholesale vulgarity of language, the sexual predatory behavior, the deep misogyny, the bigoted and insulting views.

Gov. Mario Cuomo said you campaign in poetry and govern in prose. Perhaps the opposite will be true this time around.

If not, I will fight as a journalist–as we all must–to defend and protect the unique value system that makes these United States–and with which it seeks to influence the world.

The conservative radio host who may be the next White House press secretary says mainstream media is hostile to traditional values.

I would say it’s just the opposite. And have you read about the “Heil, victory” meeting in Washington, DC this past weekend?

Why aren’t there more stories about the dangerous rise of the far right here and in Europe?

Since when did anti-Semitism stop being a litmus test in this country?

We must fights against normalization of the unacceptable.

A week before the heated Brexit referendum in the U.K., the gorgeous, young, optimistic, idealistic, compassionate MP Jo Cox, a remainer, was shot and stabbed to death by a maniac yelling “Britain first.” She was particularly sensitive to the plight of Syrian war refugees.

At his trial, the court was told the accused had researched information on the SS and the KKK.

Just a few weeks ago, her husband, Brendan, now raising their two tiny toddlers, expanded for me on an op-ed he’d written:

“Political leaders and people generally must embrace the responsibility to speak out against bigotry. Unless the center holds against the insidious creep of extremism, history shows how quickly hatred is normalized. What begins with biting your tongue for political expediency, or out of social awkwardness, soon becomes complicity with something far worse. Before you know it, it’s already too late.”

So now the solutions!

Somehow, the war of attrition in this country has to end. You’ve all seen the results of this election. It’s very close. The nation is very divided, and angry.

Are we in the media going to keep whipping up that war–or are we going to take a deep breath and maybe have a reset?!

It matters to us out there abroad too.

For better or for worse, this is the world’s only superpower. Culturally too.

The political example, the media example set here, are quickly emulated and rolled out across the world.

We, the media, can either contribute to a more functional system or to deepening the political dysfunction.

Which world do we want to leave our children?

In the same way, politics has been driven into poisonous partisan and paralyzing corners, where political differences are criminalized, where the zero sum game means in order for me to win, you have to be destroyed. What happened to compromise and common ground?

That same dynamic has infected powerful segments of the American media.

Like it has in Egypt and Turkey and Russia, where journalists have been pushed into political partisan corners as we see here tonight–delegitimized, accused of being enemies of the state.

Journalism itself has become weaponized. We have to stop it.

We all have a huge amount of work to do, investigating wrongdoing, holding power accountable, enabling decent government, defending basic rights, actually covering the world–Russia, Syria, North Korean nukes.

Can’t we have differences without killing each other off?

As a profession, let’s fight for what is right.

Let’s fight for our values.

Bad things do happen when good people do nothing.

In the words of the great civil rights leader, Congressman John Lewis:

“Young people and people not so young have a moral obligation and a mission and a mandate to get in good trouble.”

So let’s go out and make some.

And especially–let’s fight to remain relevant and useful.

Perhaps contemplating the long weekend ahead,

Let’s resolve not to be turkeys voting for Thanksgiving!

Happy holidays, everyone.”

Would The World Be Better If We Were All Vegetarians?

It is a dramatic question, I know.

But could it be that if we all gradually became vegetarians at some point in the future, that our planet would be better off?

The answer is complicated for a number of reasons.

This video from the Youtube page ASAPScience does a pretty good job in breaking down the question.

WATCH:

So what do you think? Would we be better off if more people became vegetarians?

What Was Popular In Every Year During The 90s?

By Bryan Vu

The 1990s were a simpler time when frosted hair tips were all the rage and boy bands ruled the music charts.

The decade started with millions tuning in to watch “Cheers” every week on T.V. before it and ended with “Friends” dominating the ratings while adult women tried to copy Rachel Green’s hairstyles.

Blockbuster movie hits included a love story on a sinking ship and a disastrous theme park filled with dinosaurs. If you were a kid, there’s a good chance that you often found a pack of Dunkaroos in your lunchbox and a Capri-Sun pouch to wash it all down. You probably also owned a Super Soaker, Tamagotchi, Pokemon cards, and begged your parents one year for a Furby under the Christmas tree. Nirvana led the rise of grunge music (and sales of flannel shirts) while other artists like A Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, and Run-D.M.C. added to what many considered the golden age of hip-hop and rap.

There were many trends that lasted through the whole decade, but each year was also unique in its own way. To fuel your nostalgia, Sunglass Warehouse put together an infographic highlighting some of the most popular trends from the 90s.

Tila Tequila Is Apparently A Nazi Now

Tila Tequila, the former reality show figure is apparently really into this alt-right thing.

Like really into it.

This is Tila Tequila's actual Twitter cover photo right now.

This is Tila Tequila’s actual Twitter cover photo right now.

As the Daily Beast points out, perhaps Tequila was the highest profile “celebrity” that the alt-right could come up with at its weekend conference in Washington, D.C.

“I went full circle from the liberal stuff, and all that…I wouldn’t want my daughter growing up in that,” Tequila said to the The Daily Beast at the conference. “I’m becoming more conservative ever since I became a mother,” she continued. “I wouldn’t want porn all over the internet [for instance]…Law and order, I think that’s very important to have. Most people are so used to being all about their ‘freedom,’ so they becomes these little crybabies. They can’t live by laws and rules. Civilization needs to be civilized.”

The conference was attended by a few hundred mostly white men.

Tequila’s support for the alt-right shouldn’t be totally shocking to us though. This is the same person that Instagramed out a picture of her baby wearing a Hitler mustache.

@InnerKermit Is Here To Steal Your Soul

You are not ready for it.

But here it is anyway- the Kermit meme that will both end and save your life.

Enter @InnerKermit.

Pure evil.

This Twitter account showing a good Kermit The Frog interacting with a dark Kermit The Frog is taking the social media site by storm.

It has racked up over 26 thousand followers in less than 24 hours.

What’s that Kermit?

No. Not the R&B stars. Don’t you dare.

The account was created by a 20 year old British kid named Liam Kay.

Kay saw a few Inner Kermit tweets on his timeline and jumped at the chance to tap into.

So he launched @InnerKermit.

“The amount of retweets and likes I’ve been getting though are insane,” Kay said. “I haven’t really had a chance to stay on track of the mentions because the notifications are crazy, I’m just glad everybody is getting a laugh from it.”

These Portraits Of Creepy Clowns Will Scare You Beyond Belief

The Creepy Clown phenomenon has reached crazy levels.

But Italian photographer Eolo Perfido may have just taken it to its inevitable conclusion- hipster photoshoots with lots of filters.

Perfido created a photo series titled Clownville, which was inspired by the work of silent film stars Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin according to Flavorwire.

And boy is it horrifying.

Ah, even Hitler is represented.

Woah.

Donald Glover, the star of the hit comedy series Atlanta will be playing one of the most beloved characters in the history of the Star Wars universe.

It was announced today that Glover will play a young Lando Calrissian in a upcoming Star Wars movie.

According to StarWars.com, Glover will be featured in the still unnamed Han Solo movie that is being directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us,” Lord and Miller said in a joint statement. “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”

Nazis Never Die: The Top 5 Urban Legends About Hitler and the Occult

The following piece contains information about Urban Legends that have mostly been debunked by fact checkers And yet they continue to spread on the internet.

By David Castello

If there is one name that will forever be synonymous with evil it is Adolph Hitler.

When he came to power in 1933, it was not over some backwater country. In fact, Germany at the time was the most technologically advanced nation on the planet.

How did this man with a Charlie Chaplin toothbrush mustache and his Brownshirts seduce millions of otherwise intelligent men and women into blindly fpllowing him on a suicidal quest to conquer the world?

Did he succeed solely because he used the Jews as scapegoats during the economic crash of the Weimar Republic that was capped by the Great Depression? Or did he and his fellow Nazis have powerful help from another dimension?

Urban Legends about Hitler and his Nazis’ use of the occult abound, but I find these five to be the most pause-worthy.

1) The Thule Society. Hitler’s membership in Munich’s Thule Society in 1919 and close relationship with mentor Dietrich Eckart marks the beginning of the Hitler and Nazi party the world would come to fear.

Besides Eckart, the Thule Society’s membership roster reads like a Who’s Who of Nazis including Rudolf Hess, Alfred Rosenberg, Hans Frank, Julius Lehmann, Gottfried Feder and Karl Harrer.

In Hitler, Eckhart found the angry but passionate World War l veteran he could mold into his German Messiah introducing him to occult powers such as Bulwer-Lytton’s Vril.

Shortly before he died from a heart attack in 1923, Eckhart supposedly told the inner circle of the Thule Society, “Hitler will dance, but it is I who have called the tune. I have initiated him into the Secret Doctrine and opened his centres of vision and given him the means to communicate with the Powers. Do not mourn for me. I shall have influenced history more than any other German.”

Many historians have sought to downplay Dietrich Eckart’s prominence in Hitler’s life, but that position is countered by the fact that Hitler dedicated the second volume of Mein Kampf to him and named the Waldbühne arena in Berlin as the Dietrich Eckart Bühne when it opened for the 1936 Summer Olympics.

2) The Vril Society. Whereas the Thule Society was basically an anti-Semite and anti-Communist organization who lusted for a German Messiah, the Vril Society made no bones about their intent to communicate with the other side.

Founded by Karl Haushofer, the Vril Society eventually included the Lords of the Black Stone, the Black Knights of the Thule Society, and the Order of the Black Sun (later incorporated into the elite of Heinrich Himmler’s SS).

A Vienna-born medium named Maria Orsic began receiving telepathic messages in an unknown language and met regularly with the Vril Society along with another medium named Sigrun.

Both Maria and Sigrun were dropdead gorgeous, each wearing their hair in an extremely long ponytail.

As Maria deciphered these messages, she realized they were coming from the Aldebaran star system (68 light-years away in the constellation Taurus) whose beings claimed they colonized the Earth eons ago, creating the Sumerian culture in Mesopotamia.

These messages included plans for a flying machine that could reach Aldebaran.

As the legend goes, Maria Orsic later escaped to Aldebaran in one of these craft. Her last message to the Vril Society on March 11, 1945 read, “No one is staying here.”

3) Nazi UFOs. The flying machine plans that Maria Orsic received from Aldebaran were sent to Dr. W. O. Schuman at the University of Munich who deemed them credible and a decision was made to construct the craft with funding from the Thule Society.

Progress was slow and it took three years just for the parts to arrive. It then took over ten years to complete construction.

Flown by World War I ace Lothar Waiz, the first test flight occurred in 1934. The craft rose sixty meters in the air and then plummeted to the ground. Waiz escaped unharmed and successfully flew it later that year.

By this time, Hitler took notice and Himmler’s Order of the Black Sun occult group of the SS, originally part of the Vril Society, claimed the project with Maria as an advisor. There were further tests including the Vril-7 in late 1944 which supposedly entered a dimension channel or worm hole that could facilitate a journey to Aldebaran.

Upon landing, witnesses said the craft looked as though it had aged over a hundred years.

After the war, the US focused on rocket propulsion spacecraft spearheaded by Wernher von Braun. The Nazi saucers were propelled by an anti-gravity mechanism and the Soviets may have obtained information about the program.

Richard Russell, who served 38 years in the US Senate and was chairman of the Armed Services Committee from 1951 to 1969, stated in an Air Force Intelligence report, dated October 14, 1955, that he and two traveling companions spotted two flying saucers on October 4, 1955 while traveling by rail across Russia’s Transcaucasus region.

4) The Hollow Earth Of Antarctica. In 1943, German Navy Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz declared that his submarine fleet had “built for the Führer an impregnable fortress at the other end of the world” in the region of Queen Maude’s Land, Antarctica, later renamed Neuschwabenland.

Hitler allegedly believed in a hollow earth with moderate climate existing somewhere in Antarctica and conspiracy theorists had a field day with this one after the war.

In December 1946, Operation Highjump, commanded by Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, reached Antarctica with a task force consisting of 4,700 men and 13 ships including the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Philippine Sea.

Needless to say, the size of this naval force raised more than a few eyebrows, especially when the reason made public was nothing more benign than aerial mapping, building a runway and refurbishing a base.

After the expedition ended in February 1947, rumors began to spread about the planes launched from the aircraft carrier destroying a Nazi military installation and being attacked by UFOs. Rumors is the key word here.

5) Winston Churchill’s Warning To The World. Walter Johannes Stein (1891-1957) was an Austrian philosopher and one of the pioneers of Anthroposophy.

During World War ll, Stein was a confidential advisor to Winston Churchill about the minds and motivations of Adolph Hitler and the leaders of the Nazi Party. Churchill reportedly told him, “The occultism of the Nazi party should not under any circumstances be revealed to the general public.”

The problem is that the sole source of Stein’s alleged relationship with Churchill comes from the Introduction in Trevor Ravenscroft’s best seller, The Spear Of Destiny.

When the book was first published in 1973 it literally rocked the Nazi occult market back on its heels with bombshell after bombshell about Hitler’s early life and the Nazi occultists who brought him to power.

It’s a fantastic read, but over time the wheels began to fall off the cart as researchers and fact checkers methodically picked it apart. In 1982, Ravenscroft admitted that he never actually met Stein, but communicated with him through séances. Nevertheless, to this day the book has legions of defenders.
