-Campbell is one of the most controversial politicians in the state and is fending off a strong challenge from former prosecutor Jason Pizzo.

-An historic figure, Campbell is the first ever Haitian-American elected to the State Senate, but she has also been dogged with serious questions about her lack of ethics and is often at odds with her party on important issues.

-She’s been called a “bigot” by fellow Democrat, Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith and is suspected to be a secret Republican by the Miami-Dade Democratic Party.

-But many believe that she is still the favorite to win today because of her iconic position in the Haitian community.

Jeff Greene Is Helping Daphne Campbell In The Final Week Of The Campaign

–Jeff Greene, a Democratic candidate for Governor has been assisting Senator Daphne Campbell’s struggling campaign in the final days before the August 28th primary election.

-Greene, through his PAC, paid for a slate that endorses Campbell and a series of other local and statewide Democratic candidates.

–Greene’s action has drawn harsh criticism from many in Miami-Dade Democratic politics.

Jeff Greene has promised to use his immense wealth to help Democrats beat Republicans up and down the ballot in Florida this year.

But he’s also helping one controversial incumbent Democrat fend off a fellow party member in a high profile state senate race.

Flyers that claim to be the “Miami-Dade Democratic Slate” feature a headshot of Greene next to popular Congresswoman Frederica Wilson.

Embattled Senator Daphne Campbell.

“Shame on Jeff Greene that he would do something like this,” Sears said.

Campaign workers for Senator Campbell have been seen passing out the flyers in Miami Shores and Biscayne Park by local community members and by a RISE NEWS reporter at the North Miami Public Library early vote location.

The “Miami-Dade Democratic Slate” flyer was paid for by Greene’s “Florida Defense Fund”, a PAC he set up at the end of July according to public records on the state election website.

And according to a source inside the Greene campaign, Campbell’s ex-husband and current campaign advisor Hubert Campbell is now working as a field organizer for the Palm Beach billionaire.

Greene campaign spokesperson Claire VanSusteren said that Greene has not endorsed a candidate in the race between Campbell and former Miami-Dade assistant State Attorney Jason Pizzo.

VanSusteren also said Greene has never given money to Campbell or Pizzo.

Tangela Sears is a well-known Miami politico and anti-gun violence activist who has strong ties to Congresswoman Wilson.

Sears blasted Greene for paying for the flyer and using Wilson’s picture on it.

“It’s got the Congresswoman’s photo on that to mislead the voters,” Sears told RISE NEWS in a phone interview. “We know that the congresswoman has endorsed Andrew Gillum [in the governor’s race].”

Sears said that this was a political trick that has a long history in Miami politics but that it distracts from real issues facing the community.

“Shame on Jeff Greene that he would do something like this,” Sears said.

She also had choice words for Senator Campbell.

“I guess Daphne Campbell, being desperate, accepted the money,” Sears said. “Campbell will work with any candidate. Loyalty really doesn’t matter to her.”

Senator Campbell is in the middle of a brutal re-election fight with Pizzo.

Slates are common in Miami politics. This one is supportive of Andrew Gillum’s campaign for governor and is paid for by Miami politico Willis Howard. It was being passed out by Gillum paid staff at the North Miami Public Library early vote site.

Though she has never lost an election and has been in elected office since 2010, a recent poll shows that Pizzo has a solid lead in the race.

Campbell has had a tough year.

After Hurricane Irma, she was caught texting an FPL lobbyist trying to get him to turn on the power at her home, she has had to face questions about whether she has ever lived in the district that she represents in Tallahassee and has called the police on reporters, twice. She has also confirmed her continued opposition to gay adoption and abortion rights, two stances that many Democrats feel is in direct contradiction to the values of the party.

“They matter,” Hardemon said. “When those slates get in the hands of older people, who vote right down the line.”

The Greene campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

A source connected to the Greene campaign told RISE NEWS that Hubert Campbell- Senator Campbell’s ex-husband is working for Greene as a field organizer.

A source connected to the Greene campaign said that the flyer was generated by local community organizers and paid for by the PAC.

The Greene campaign source said that there is no “suggested or explicit endorsement on those cards”.

State Representative Roy Hardemon said that he wasn’t mad at Greene for paying for the flyer that endorses one of his primary opponents- Joseph Beauvil.

“He’s trying to win the race,” Hardemon said of Greene in a phone call with RISE NEWS. “Typical politics.”

Beauvil told RISE NEWS that he had nothing to do with the flyer.

Despite not being angry at Greene, Hardemon does believe that the slate like the one paid for by the gubernatorial candidate’s PAC, does have a serious impact in elections.

“They matter,” Hardemon said. “When those slates get in the hands of older people, who vote right down the line.”

Senator Campbell’s opponent Jason Pizzo blasted Greene for getting involved in the race.

“I thought Jeff Greene was directing resources to competitive state races to help Democrats, not to indirectly fund one against another,” Pizzo said in a statement to RISE NEWS. “And frankly, funding a slate card with someone who votes against fundamental democratic values, makes this even more confusing.”

**–State Senator Daphne Campbell (D-North Miami Beach) called the police on a RISE NEWS reporter for filming her during a Miami Shores Village Council meeting.**

–A police report shows that Senator Campbell knew that the man filming her in the public place was a reporter.

–Campbell also called the police on a Miami Herald reporter earlier today while she was debating her primary opponent Jason Pizzo in North Miami Beach.

–The Executive Director of the Radio Television Digital News Association- an advocacy group for broadcast stations and online publications, blasted Campbell for trying to intimidate RISE NEWS.

Statement from RISE NEWS Publisher Rich Robinson:

“State Senator Daphne Campbell called the police on me for committing an act of journalism.

While we’ve known that this took place for over three months, we only received a copy of the police report today.

Coincidentally, Senator Campbell also called the police on Miami Herald reporter Sarah Blaskey ‏today.

Update: @daphnecampbell called the police on me for “threatening behavior” at this event. Last time I checked, asking questions at a public forum was allowed. Don’t worry guys, cops didn’t think the complaint was credible.

In both cases, police did not take Senator Campbell’s claims to be credible.

On May 1, 2018, I attended the tail-end of a public meeting of the Miami Shores Village Council.

I knew that Senator Campbell would be there and I wanted to get some more b-roll shots of her in action in the community for possible use in future stories.

I filmed Senator Campbell interacting with members of the Miami Shores council and filmed her as she left the building.

I also filmed her while she was driven away in a car.

All the while, I stayed on a public sidewalk.

I’ve been trained to report the facts and hold the powerful to account.

I’m allowed to do all of this thanks to our nation’s First Amendment.

Senator Campbell doesn’t seem familiar with the protections for members of the press laid out in the Constitution, so she called the police.

The police didn’t seem to take her claims seriously.

Is Daphne Campbell Trying To Trick Republicans Into Voting For Her?

–Senator Daphne Campbell has been accused of illegally sending mailers to Republican voters in an attempt to trick them into voting for her, a Democrat.

–Campbell says that it is her opponent Jason Pizzo who is behind the ploy.

Miami has a long and rich history of politicians playing dirty tricks on each other.

And signs are pointing to another example of that in 2018.

William Stuttgen is a registered Republican who lives in the Belle Meade area of Miami.

He’s retired and really dislikes his State Senator- Daphne Campbell.

He even has a campaign sign for Campbell’s opponent, Jason Pizzo in his front yard.

So when he received a letter in the mail last week that apparently came from a group of local Republicans that endorsed Campbell in the District 38 primary on August 28th, he was incensed.

Since no Republican or Independent registered to run in the general election in November, all voters in the district will be able to vote in the Democratic Primary.

Whoever wins in three weeks will be the district’s next State Senator.

And Stuttgen thinks that Campbell is using a classic dirty trick to get unsuspecting Republicans to vote for her.

“Someone got a list of the registered Republicans,” Stuttgen said in an interview at his home with RISE NEWS. “Pizzo didn’t do this. This is a Campbell thing.”

The chair of the Miami-Dade Democratic Party Juan Cuba said that they will be investigating whether Campbell is behind the flyer, as first reported by the Miami New Times:

The @MiamiDadeDems steering committee will be investigating/ sending @SenCampbellD38 a letter inquiring whether her campaign is involved with this mailer, & asking her to renounce this illegal tactic.

Stuttgen said that the flyer was mailed to his house and had a stamp on it.

But it had no return address.

The name of the organization that claimed to pay for the flyer- “your Republican Neighbor” is not a registered political group in Florida and it is not clear where the money for the mailing came from.

It is also not clear how many people received the mailer.

Pizzo told RISE NEWS that his campaign has received another flyer from a voter in Miami Beach.

A Pizzo-supporting dark money group called FloridaStrong also said that have received a flyer from a voter who lives in Miami Beach that came from the same “your Republican Neighbor” group.

RISE NEWS canvassed six random houses on the street that Stuttgen lives on in Belle Meade.

None of the people we spoke to, including a registered Republican had received the flyer as of Sunday.

“Given my opponent’s unethical practices, there should be little doubt that she and her campaign coordinated this slate card,” Pizzo told RISE NEWS.

In a wide ranging phone interview that lasted nearly 45 minutes, Campbell denied the claims that she was behind the flyer.

She said that it was Pizzo who paid for the flyers to go out.

“He made it. It’s Christian Ulvert,” Campbell said of Pizzo’s political advisor. “I don’t have no money to do a slate. It’s them doing it. They’re so stupid.”

“Jason Pizzo can not take me down because I’m a people person,” Campbell said. “I’ve done so much for the communities I serve.

“Pizza wants developers from New Jersey to get rid of Haitians from Little Haiti,” Campbell said. “This is an attack on a black woman. I pray to God that August 28th that he gets his results. I leave Jason in God’s hands.”

On the campaign trail, Campbell has claimed that Pizzo is a secret Republican who wants to buy the election.

“I’m a proud Democrat,” Campbell said at a recent event in North Miami.

While Stuttgen is a Republican, he said that he is moderate on social issues.

Campbell is a pro life, anti-gay marriage Democrat who has been consistently supported by one of Florida’s most conservative religious groups, the Christian Family Coalition.

“She thinks people vote party line and they don’t look at the names,” Stuttgen said. “This is lunacy.

Campbell has a long history of controversy and borderline criminal behavior.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, RISE NEWS uncovered that Campbell had used her personal connection to an FPL lobbyist to try to get power turned on at the house of her “mother” before her other constituents.

Stuttgen said that if Pizzo loses to Campbell, he will be leaving Miami for good.

Senator Lied About Her Mother Being Dead During Irma To Skip Power Outage Line

–State Senator Daphne Campbell lied about her mother being ill in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. Her mother had been dead for at least a year by that time.

**–RISE NEWS was the first to expose text messages Campbell sent to a FPL lobbyist one day after Hurricane Irma impacted South Florida.**

–The messages revealed that Campbell tried to use her status as a State Senator to get FPL to turn on electricity at her home.

–Her reasoning for the abuse of power? She had a sick mother at home who needed electricity to run an oxygen machine.

–Campbell texted: “Can someone helps [sic] me with the power. I do have a sick person in my house and she’s using oxygen. The address is… [address redacted]. Same than my children’s house…[address redacted]. Thanks Senator Campbell.”

–The problem (one of many with that rationale) is that Campbell’s mother was dead at the time, according to Campbell’s own words.

–Campbell was caught by the Miami New Times in the latest lie after reporter Jerry Iannelli came across a Youtube video from 2016, where Campbell talked about her dead mother.

–“My father and my mother died,” she says around the 2:20 mark of a video posted to Youtube in 2016.

-A Campbell staffer tried to defend his boss to the New Times by saying that she wasn’t actually talking about her biological mother. “Instead, Campbell was referring to a long-standing family friend whom she allegedly refers to as ‘mom.'” The staffer did confirm that Campbell’s biological mother was dead.

Lawmaker Says He Put “Boss” Daphne Campbell Signs On Public School Property

–Roy Hardemon, a member of the Florida House of Representatives admitted that he personally put up campaign yard signs on public school property.

-Hardemon said he did it for his “boss”, State Senator Daphne Campbell.

**-Two Campbell re-election campaign signs were spotted on a fence on WJ Bryan Elementary School in North Miami by a RISE NEWS reporter.**

-Miami-Dade Public Schools have regulations against political candidates putting campaign materials on school grounds.

-Hardemon and Campbell are two of the most controversial politicians in Florida politics.

-Hardemon is one of 120 Florida State Representatives, while Campbell is one of 40 State Senators.

The 2018 primary election is still over eight months away, but that hasn’t stopped two local politicians from trying to use public school property to win votes for one of their campaigns.

State Representative Roy Hardemon, a Miami Democrat, personally put up two large yard signs for State Senator Daphne Campbell’s re-election campaign on the gate of WJ Bryan Elementary School in North Miami.

A RISE NEWS reporter spotted the two signs on opposite ends of the school’s property off busy 125th St.

He then called Campbell’s Senate office to get an explantation for why they were placed there.

Moments later the reporter received a phone call from an unidentified man who said that he put the signs up on Campbell’s behalf.

“It ain’t nothing wrong with [a sign] saying Happy Holidays,” the man said. “I’m trying to figure out what’s wrong with that.”

When asked the made identified himself as “Roy… Representative Roy Hardemon.”

The phone number from which he called the reporter from matched the phone number that Hardemon listed with the Florida Candidate Tracking System.

“You called my boss and she chewed me out,” Hardemon said of Campbell. “I put the signs up for her. She blasted me out.”

Hardemon, who represents House District 108, hasn’t publicly disclosed payments from Campbell if he is indeed employed by her.

In fact, he hasn’t publicly disclosed any form of income on his Financial Interest Disclosure filings with the Florida Commission on Ethics.

Hardemon also doesn’t have a profession listed on his State Legislature Bio on the Florida House of Representatives website.

He is one of only three member of the 120 member House to not have a listed occupation (The others being Jennifer Mae Sullivan and Barbara Watson).

When pressed on his relationship with Campbell, a Democrat who represents District 38, Hardemon backtracked.

“She’s not my boss, she’s my friend,” Hardemon said.

Campbell was not able to be reached by the time of publication.

Hardemon said that parents of the school should be happy to support Campbell because of what he said was her leadership on their behalf.

“Somebody’s doing there best and people are complaining about signs,” Hardemon said. “I’ve had it up to here with these petty complaints.”

He also said that he thought the signs were allowed to be on the school’s fence.

“The fence is a public right of way,” Hardemon said of the fence, which is clearly on school property. “You know how it’s called, it’s an unwritten rule.”

Except that is not an unwritten rule, the rule is actually written down.

According to the Miami-Dade County Public Schools policy on advertisements on school grounds, political campaign materials are not allowed.

“Advertisements containing a campaign or other political message supporting or opposing a political candidate for public office, a political platform, or a political issue, are prohibited,” the school board passed law reads.

Since Miami-Dade public schools were out for the winter break, spokespeople for the School Board were unable to be reached.

Calls to Bryan Elementary were also not answered due to the break.

Both Campbell and Hardemon represent Bryan Elementary in Tallahassee and both are up for re-election to their offices in August.

Campbell tried to use her connection to an FPL lobbyist to turn on electricity at her house after Hurricane Irma and Hardemon has been arrested 19 times over his life, including for punching a woman in the face in 2014.

Senator Daphne Campbell Tried To Use Connection To FPL Lobbyist To Get Power On For Her Family Post Irma

Sen. Daphne Campbell Is Lying

In response to a RISE NEWS story titled, “Senator Tried To Use Connection To FPL Lobbyist To Get Power On For Her Family Post Irma“, Florida State Senator Daphne Campbell issued a statement on social media that made several accusations about our news organization.

None of them are true, and we wish to set the record straight.

Obviously Campbell did not like the facts that were reported in our article.

That’s too bad for her.

We stand 100% behind our reporting and find it distasteful that she would choose to attack the press instead of taking responsibility for her actions.

Her actions show that she tried to use her position as an elected official for personal gain.

It is a clear case of public corruption and she should be held to account.

Here’s her statement in full.

Below, RISE NEWS editor and the reporter who interviewed Campbell, Rich Robinson will go point by point in debunking her claims:

“It is a shame for someone to be so cruel by victimizing someone like me during such a difficult post disastrous time like this. Imagine we are all struggling together fighting for the needs of the vulnerable within our district and for someone to use delicate circumstances surrounding this situation for the purpose of their own ploy is a disgrace.
Ever since before the hurricane, I was instrumental by working hard and helping to prepare many of my elderly and most vulnerable constituents to ensure that they will be safe to face the potential catastrophe that we were all anticipating. Luckily for my district we escaped what could have been the deadliest “monster” that our district would have ever faced.”

We don’t really understand what she is talking about here.

“Although our district was not hit by a category 5 but its effect has caused my constituents enough pain and suffering. My constituents include 15 cities with a population of approximately 500,000 individuals. This includes two of my younger children and my medically compromised mother who lives on oxygen. Hundreds of thousands including my two children, my mother and my sister were without electricity. Up to today Sunday, September 17, 2017 my children are still without power and my mother just got hers last Friday, September 15.”

We said in our story that “RISE NEWS is not able to independently verify at which point the power came back on at the houses of Campbell’s family members.” However, she is the one who said that “as soon as I text him [FPL lobbyist John Holley] an address, you got the light.” That means that she lied to us when she said that lights were turned on as soon as addresses were sent to Holley. She’s lying.

“I fought hard day and night, around the clock going above and beyond and doing everything within my power to help counteract the ill effect of the storm by responding to numerous calls and text messages regarding the power outage. As many are already aware, I communicate endlessly with my constituents via phone calls, emails, and text messages; then there’s no doubt that my responding to my constituents will include numerous text messages. After the storm, among the many text messages was a text concerning my two younger children and my sick mother [living in two separate addresses]. Most of my calls and texts to a FPL Representative pertaining to rectifying my constituents’ power outage.”

This is mostly true. Most of the texts Campbell told us to take pictures of were ones from constituents. But the first group of texts she sent to Holley were about her own family and not her constituents. Sure she tried to get FPL relief for her constituents, but only after she made sure her family was given relief. That’s called political corruption and its illegal.

“I managed to organize a “feed the community” event. While there, I noticed someone came and sat right next to me. I didn’t know who that person was but I always welcome everyone around me. ”

This is a lie. I covered the event for RISE NEWS. I wore a press badge as I always do around my neck. I walked up to Campbell and introduced myself as a reporter, gave my name and affiliation and asked her for an interview. She was sitting down and I was standing up next to her. We talked for a few minutes before I crouched down to better hear an answer to a question I asked. At that point, she pulled up a chair for me to sit down on and I sat next to her. But I did not just walk up and sit “right” next to her. My momma raised me better than that. She’s lying.

“My phone mysteriously disappeared. After about fifteen minutes of searching for my phone to no avail it suddenly reappeared where I last saw it. I did not expect that anyone would come to a “feeding the community” event, in order to sneak away my phone to steal information from the text messages I use to help my people.”

This is a lie. I never took Campbell’s phone. She pulled her phone out on her own and asked me to look at texts from happy constituents that she had been serving that week. During that process of her showing me texts, she said that I should take pictures of the texts so I could write about them later. I did what she asked. I took 56 pictures of Campbell’s texts. This process took probably 20 minutes in total due to the amount of messages that she wanted me to document. She held her phone and scrolled between messages the whole time. She did this because she thought I was going to write a puff piece about how amazing she was. She was wrong. She’s lying.

Of the 56 pictures I took of her texts, you can visibly see part of Campbell’s body in 54 of them.

In this photo and in dozens more, you can actually see Campbell physically holding the phone while I take photos of texts she wants to show me.

“Unfortunately, one of the text messages taken from my phone was the one concerning my two children and sick mother.”

This is factually wrong. It was not just one text message regarding her family- it was four text messages spread out over the course of an entire day. She’s lying.

“Today I felt numbed and my heart pained after discovering that the person who had taken my phone along with the text messages is the owner of a news media publication.”

She knew I was a reporter. I told her so. I was wearing a badge labeled “Press” and even gave her my business card with the RISE NEWS logo on it. She was very pleased that I was there until she read the story. And oh yeah, I then interviewed her on camera, for around 10 minutes. She’s lying.

“I gave no consent to anyone to use my phone.”

I didn’t use her phone. She told me to take pictures of texts on her phone that she showed me. She’s lying.

“I have apparently found out that this media is located within my very district. It would be an understatement just to say how disappointed I am in this despicable, atrocious and malicious behavior. I am aware there are hundreds or thousands of competing news media out there and I know it is rough for them because if they do not have false news they won’t make it.”

My constituents have been suffering, still suffering and few will continue to suffer without electricity for a short period of time but by the grace of God with my due diligence, the suffering will end soon. Yes I am a state senator, but first I am human. I am also a mother, someone’s child, and someone’s sister. God knows I do not deserve this kind of bad treatment.”

“All I want to do is continue to work hard and help my constituents including my family. I want the best for my people. I am not perfect but is it fair or right for anyone to go through such extreme measure just to hurt someone? I know that God is on my side, and He will take this situation under his control.

Daphne Campbell got caught red handed. She obviously still doesn’t believe that she did anything wrong and refuses to take any accountability for her actions.

Hopefully, someone will hold her to account.
