NY Times Op-Ed Suggets Sunny Isles Beach Russians Could Be Key To Mueller Investigation

What’s News With This Story: 

– In a much talked about op-ed in the New York Times, the founders of Fusion GPS defended their investigation into Russia’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential campaign. 

-The founders of the research firm and authors of the piece, Glenn R. Simpson and Peter Fritsch pushed back against what they saw as Congressional Republican efforts to “chase rabbits” instead of going after the “bear”- President Donald Trump. 

–They said that in Congressional testimony, they informed members of Congress that they were concerned by the level of Russian involvement in the election. 

-Here’s the point that should draw attention to those in South Florida: “We told Congress that from Manhattan to Sunny Isles Beach, Fla., and from Toronto to Panama, we found widespread evidence that Mr. Trump and his organization had worked with a wide array of dubious Russians in arrangements that often raised questions about money laundering. Likewise, those deals don’t seem to interest Congress.”

–Sunny Isles Beach has become an area in recent years where scores of Russian families live. 

–There is also the Trump International Beach Resort located in Sunny Isles Beach.

“In its first analysis of the bill that Republicans the House of Representatives passed in early May, the CBO concluded that out of pocket costs for mental health and maternity care would increase by thousands of dollars a year in many states. The CBO predicted that the health bill would create savings of $119 billion over the next 10 years.”

FIU Students Plan Massive Walk Out To Protest Trump

Students at the largely hispanic Florida International University are planning to walk out of class Wednesday afternoon to protest the election of Donald Trump.

The action is in conjunction with a national movement that wants college campuses to declare themselves a #SanctuaryCampus in order to fight against Trump’s promises to deport millions of undocumented immigrants.

The protest will start at 3 PM and run until 6 PM according to the Facebook page that has been set up to organize it.

After walking out of class, students are planning at meeting at a free speech zone located at the GC Lawns outside of Einstein Bagels on the FIU main campus.

“On November 16th, we are calling on all students to join the movement to declare their campuses a #SanctuaryCampus and commit to putting our bodies between Trump and undocumented students.

It’s time that we unite to protect our most vulnerable people– including undocumented immigrants, Black people, Muslims, Queer people, and all people of color.

We must amplify each other and rise up together in the face of Trump.”

What Do I Tell My Daughter After Trump’s Win?

What just happened in America is beyond anything I could have ever imagined.

The soul of this country was torn apart at the very moment when we had a chance to rise above the hateful rhetoric we have been forced to listen to for months and to unite with a compassion for those who are different, a love for our country beyond measure and an acceptance of opinion and ideals that makes this country great….Not Great Again … GREAT!

Instead we watched a wild witch-hunt supported by a predominantly white male force incessantly run after our first female candidate as if she was the most horrendous human being alive. The emails, the emails, and the emails….must I say more.

We have allowed a man to escape the same trials beset on a woman and skate free through a remarkable path of no consequence for things that otherwise make us gasp in disbelief.

Corruption?

Has anyone, including the media, dared to bring out the stories of Donald Trump’s association with a convicted sexual predator who he has called “a decent man?”

Has anyone, especially the media, given any of the women who accused Donald Trump of mishandling them more than a story or two, or a conversation sparking protests and demands for the truth within their own circles?

Does anyone who voted for Donald Trump even understand how many lies he told during the campaign and how many facts he got wrong, all proven in written form by fact-checkers, historians and other leaders?

Does anyone who voted for Donald Trump really think he is going to be honest with anyone when he takes the Oval Office?

What do I tell my teenage daughter when she asks why a man who has obviously done so much wrong in his life doesn’t get held to the same standard as a woman?

In this case, one who devoted her life to public service and the betterment of the lives of children and women?

What do I tell my teenage daughter when she asks me how an election can be won by a man who has proven to be unfit?

Donald Trump fed into the weaknesses of this group just like the schoolyard bully.

He surrounded himself with people who feed negative and unfair propaganda to the masses each and every day.

He has been fed by a silver spoon all his life and has never known what it feels like to mine for coal, live in rural America on a fixed income or work all day every day for minimum wage barely making ends meet.

I do. How can anyone expect him to understand? What do I tell my daughter?

This president-elect has admittedly, and in his own words, grabbed women by their “pussy” and let’s not forget had extra-marital affairs.

A man who has bankrupted companies more than I like to count at the risk it puts such great fear in my heart for our country that I can’t even keep my head up.

A man who openly made fun of a disabled person on national television with the world watching. A man who couldn’t even bring his ego in long enough to pay respect to a four-star father who lost his son fighting for our country.

A man who has no military experience whatsoever and had the fortune of money behind him when he escaped serving our country because of a spur in his foot, a spur he cannot even remember correctly.

A man who has made clear he has no tolerance for immigrants, minorities, gay people and the like. Is this really what my America looks like? What do I tell my daughter?

I am old enough to remember several elections and while my candidate of choice didn’t always win, I don’t remember our country protesting with such fervor at the prospect of an individual not fit to run our country ever before.

How can this be? Why didn’t the majority of people who voted for this man understand this? How can a narcissistic egomaniacal liar make it to the oval office? How can bad behavior continue to be awarded in a country that was to represent “strength, power and honesty?” What do I tell my daughter?

He fed into the uneducated and the displaced, allowing them to believe he will save them. That’s what bullies do.

They find the most disenfranchised weak individual on the playground and pick on them. Does anyone not see this and how this played out for someone who has the world in dismay and our allies bewildered?

Does anyone not notice that headlines across the globe are using such words as “W.T.F” and “Are you Kidding Me?. While those headlines circulate, can we not sit here and really ask ourselves if that is OK, if it is OK for a man to allow our country to now be a joke, a misfit, a low-lying power that doesn’t take all the risks involved with letting this man through the front door seriously. What do I tell my daughter?

I worked for someone who bears the exact same traits and behavior of Donald Trump.

They don’t change my friends, but they keep on winning despite their arrogance, lies and ugly behavioral traits.

I worked for a narcissistic man who treats women horribly, depletes the human spirit as a game of fun and thrives on power he exerts to make the “little person” feel even smaller.

The day I was able to leave that horrendous work situation was the best day of my professional life.

It is because of that and why I anxiously wait for four years to fly by faster than anything imaginable.

I am ashamed our country has gotten to the point where decency didn’t outweigh ignorance.

When I woke this morning I was hopeful to feel a bit of anxiety leaving my body, a sense of “we shall overcome” and a certain bit of optimism that would take me through the next four years.

It didn’t happen.

The tears keep flowing and the idea of uncertainty and embarrassment override any sense of understanding I can possibly relate to what just happened in this country…my country.

We have an Electoral College system that I believe is flawed and antiquated.

We have a process that doesn’t allow for certain standards of conduct to be upheld for the highest office in the world.

We have people who still believe that black Americans and women have only defined places in their lives.

Yet none of that thought process, none of that diabolical way of life compares to the remarkable and unprecedented statement on humanity in which the election of Donald J. Trump leads to.

And that is the purpose of why I write today.

As of this morning Hillary Clinton continues to win the popular vote. I now know how Al Gore felt.

Our electoral college process which Donald Trump, in his own words and in his own tweet said “our electoral college process is a disaster, it is not democracy” proves once again to not honor the real power of our people.

I am hopeful that enough Americans join in to petition for this process to be reviewed, refined and changed so the people do speak in our next election and that the process is changed.

I know that I will do what I can to encourage and persuade those I come in contact with or know to support this change. “We the People” is exactly what we should be thinking!

I will close with recognizing that people wanted change. They wanted change in Washington and they wanted change in policy and for this, I can agree.

There were so many better choices for change throughout the entire election process. There were so many candidates who could have brought about change while keeping our country’s reputation alive with our allies, protected our country from the threat of all kinds of evil, changed our education, health system and environment for the good and protected our children.

But yet the hate-filled people who couldn’t get past their own simple way of thinking that someone who has billions will also make them billions have a very rude awakening coming their way.

It is hard to try to determine how change will be brought on by someone contemplating putting the same “old white men” in his cabinet and some who have questionable pasts…Giuliani, Gingrich, Christie. Is that an example of the change this country was looking for?

When the DOW drops 7,000 points in one night everyone needs to pay attention. When social media trends with #notmypresident in a democratic society, everyone needs to pay attention.

When women are asking “why have we not come any further?” everyone needs to pay attention. When immigrants who are the very fabric of our nation, and black Americans who gave more than they should have ever had to so we could build this country, ask am I safe, everyone needs to pay attention and when gays and transgender people ask if they can walk the streets and be free anymore, everyone needs to pay attention.

I simply ask “What will I tell my daughter?” And what will my daughter tell her daughter?

Open your eyes and ears America.

Be a voice stronger than you ever expected.

Please bring about change and force yourself to not tire in this fight and trying to make a difference, blocking hatred in any way or form possible. Be proud of who you are and for who will become.

Take a stand and be a force for those who need to be held up.

Don’t let this get away from you over time, don’t become complacent and don’t ever stop making sure your path to greatness is an important opportunity for all of us!

This is what you can tell your daughter.

The View Of Trump’s Election From Alabama’s Black Belt

I have never been one to follow the crowd.

But as a writer, I feel I should discuss how I feel about this election for the sake of my personal journalistic ethics.

Politics have never been something I have cared for.

We rarely discussed them in my house, because we agreed on everything.

I was taught to never ask someone who they voted for, as it was none of my business. I still live by that rule.

Previously, I have voted in two local elections, but those did not compare to the tremendous amount of pride I felt when I walked into my polling place in rural Providence, Alabama.

The right to vote is something we are truly privileged to have as Americans.

As a woman walking into the polling place, I felt extremely privileged and humbled as my right to vote is something still relatively new in our country’s history.

At first, this election felt like one big joke, where we all waited for someone to jump out and yell “GOTCHA.” But as time went by, it became evident we were not being fooled.

The two major political parties nominated Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton to compete for the highest job in the country – President.

My home state of Alabama has always been and will always be a red state. But my particular area, The Black Belt, has always been blue.

The term is said to have a double meaning; the most popular coming from the type of soil found in the area.

Additionally, the area was heavily populated with African-American slaves and sharecroppers.

Some of the most important moments from the Civil Rights Movement happened in the area such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Bloody Sunday, and The Voting Rights Act of 1965.

I do not conform to the idea of a two party system because there are elements of both that I can get on board with.

I am also extremely neutral in almost every opinion I form because I can always see both perspectives.

I do not like Donald Trump.

That being said, I do not like Donald Trump. Of all the qualified candidates the GOP could muster up, they chose him?

A reality TV star, an actor, and a sketchy businessman? Trump successfully mastered the art of a bad deal.

From unreleased tax returns to failed business ventures (i.e. Trump University, Trump Steaks, Trump Airlines etc.) he has proved he cannot be trusted with responsibility. How can a man who is offended by a Saturday Night Live skit, have the strength it takes to defeat one of the world’s biggest and dangerous terrorist organizations?

He also finds joy in making fun of those who are not affluent white men.

From disabled reporters, to immigrants, and women who do not conform to his standards, he is insensitive and just plain rude.

I also do not care much for Hillary Clinton.

While I adore the fact she is a woman who ran for office with all the odds against her, I am uncomfortable with her role in foreign affairs.

I do not doubt her knowledge (as she knows more than I), but it is what she does with that knowledge that scares me.

Foreign policy is not why the Black Belt is blue, though.

Simply put, the area depends on the democratic view of Clinton’s social policy, which helps the majority of the area’s population.

Democratic views on public housing, education, healthcare, and other social aspects are the main reason why Alabama’s poorest counties are blue.

The presidential election of 2016 will be something that we one day will look back on and laugh.

But for now, we need to keep a close eye on our country and our friends.

Liberals Can Be As Dangerous As Trump When It Comes To “Islamophobia”

For a large portion of the 21st century, liberals have taken on the role of the protective big sibling persona for any minority or controversial community in the U.S.

Time and time again, liberals speak for those who have been othered. But this type of help has enforced a new, problematic discourse that hinders ones ability to have an opinion and generate productive discussions about any kind of issue directed at a specific group of people.

The liberal protectiveness that is most destructive in today’s current state of controversy is Islamophobia.

This is a word created to criticize those who reject Muslim culture by calling them irrationally fearful of a religion.

But this is an unfair categorization for the disapproval of aspects of Islamic culture.

In 2015, Bill Maher had a round table discussion about Islam and whether or not it is predisposed to violence.

In that round table, Dinesh D’Souza explained, “What’s going on here is there is a civil war in the mind of the liberal”. He explains that liberals advocate for individual freedom for everyone and for multiculturalism all at the same time.

The latter half protects Muslim culture from any kind of criticism or intervention.

Bill Maher stated, “Christopher Hitchens said Islamophobic is a word created by fascists, and used by cowards, to manipulate morons”.

So let’s break down this very clever statement.

The Fascists, in this case, are liberals that dictate how a population can be viewed, understood, and spoken of within a political or social setting.

Cowards are those that fear political incorrectness and controversy.

And morons are the public who agree with this strategy, thus eliminating any discussion that represents Muslims in a poor fashion.

Can we really chalk up every fear of an oppressive culture to being a phobia? To be fearful of an extreme religion that has enabled people to murder and stone one another does not seem irrational; in fact, that is a very rational thing to be afraid of.

Those that feel strongly against the oppressive nature of the Islamic faith are not being phobic, they are afraid of the violence that has ensued and continues to kill innocent people due to ancient ways of thinking.

In 2013, a story was released that Arifa Bibi was stoned to death by her uncle and cousins for having a mobile phone in Pakistan.

Stoning is a violent torture method most frequently used to punish women for asserting too much freedom or for their sexuality.

Many Muslim supporters of the campaign against stoning argue that while stoning women is not written in the Koran, “it is legitimized by the Hadith – the acts and sayings of the Prophet Mohamed.”

The story also mentions another case in 2008 in which a 13-year-old girl, Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow, was buried from her neck down and stoned to death by 50 men. The reason? She had been raped by three men and was instead accused of adultery.

Our fear has not been the manifestation of a phobia of Islam; it comes from these real life tragedies.

Yet, this is not to be mistaken for a generalization that all Muslims are violent. The issue here is a misrepresentation that the religion itself invokes peace and that instead, a few extremists have reformed its ideologies and have become violent.

There is something innately violent within the religion, but that does not mean that all who follow the teachings of the Koran are violent.

This misconception comes from a lack of education and discussion on the topic. Words like Islamophobia allow this misrepresentation to exist because of the absence of communication about the violent qualities of the religion.

Both protecting and blaming an entire race is not constrictive, and it destroys any kind of productive conversation with regards to a controversial ideology.

But, disapproval of these characteristics still do not warrant the kind of blind, racist bigotry demonstrated by Donald Trump and his supporters.

The Koran, like the Bible or the Torah is a sacred text to those who read its teachings. Religion, for those who believe in it, should serve as a personal tool to connect with God or a higher being(s) in order to find support and lead a good life.

However that is not all that makes up religion.

Like any ideology, religion’s goal is to dictate and hide certain truths in order to obtain power over a population. It enforces certain beliefs, and rejects others.

This is a solidified quality of all religion, and it enables people to exclude others and their philosophies in order to support their own.

Ignoring oppressive aspects of Islam by calling anyone in opposition to the religion “Islamophobic” eliminates our ability to point out pieces of a culture that need changing for the greater good of humanity. You can disagree with something, you can even find it unacceptable, but that alone does not make you racist and it does not make you hateful.

Racism and hate come from an irrational blind assumption that all who are Muslim are also violent; xenophobia that encourages that kind of thinking proves ones stupidity.

Fear of reprimanding Islam cements the topic in mud and watches people drown in prejudice and oppression while everyone else ignores them to avoid controversial discussions.

The word, Islamophobia is not protecting Muslims, it is systematically harmful.

An individual should be able to be Muslim and not face stoning if they choose to sleep with someone before marriage or get an educating, or want to live their life differently than their parents had. That is their prerogative.

Liberals’ efforts to avoid political incorrectness allows this kind of practice to exist without reprimand, it is not protecting anyone.

However, let’s make one thing perfectly clear. By deliberately othering a religion and prejudicially demanding that they be kept from living in the U.S. is not an example of simply foregoing political correctness, it is just racism.

Donald Trump is not a leader in real discussion of controversial topics he is just racist.

Islamophobia and Islamic racism have been frequent and popular ideologies ever since 9/11, and it has kept the stigma of Muslim Americans alive.

It is acceptable to discuss the fundamental problems with Islam if they could be reasons for oppression and murder.

Just like it is acceptable to discuss gun regulation if a lack of background checks and restrictions could be the reason for massacre.

It’s time to stop speaking for other people and to instead, speak for the issues and find solutions.

If there is an inherent violence within a religion, we can talk about it without saying all Muslims are violent.

On the other hand, violence does not make it acceptable to completely omit a religion from this country, and it certainly does not warrant racism.

It is time to find the medium between both sides, to recognize that this religion of peace might not be so peaceful after all, but to also understand that that does not disregard all those who use its teachings to lead moral lives.

This Twitter Conversation Perfectly Sums Up Why Trump Is The GOP’s Nominee

Sometimes it can be pretty dangerous to look around in the parts of Twitter that don’t like the sunshine.

You know what I’m talking about: the hordes of the mentally undead who troll around and live in an alternative universe where facts don’t matter and the search for truth is futile.

But a few weeks ago, I found a Tweet chain that really does a good job in summing up why Donald Trump has become the presumptive Republican nominee for President.

Here it is in all its nutty glory:

Ah yes @LancastrianRed, it is so easy to find knowledge nowadays. And luckily, I do like to search for it, unlike you.

It turns out that many in the right-wing nut-o-sphere have been bashing Snopes for years, claiming that it is little more than a left-wing blog.

But this is not at all the truth. Snopes is run by two of the most non-partisan people you can find.

Founded in 1995 by Barbara and David Mikkelson, Snopes fact checks things that circulate around the Internet to help the general public decipher between fact and fiction. The website preforms a very important duty and has a sterling record according to many outside fact checkers.

One of those outside fact checkers, the properly named FactCheck.org looked into Snopes in 2009 to see whether it all added up. At the time, many conservatives were making claims that Snopes was a liberal tool.

But FactCheck could not find any evidence of liberal bias.

In fact, the Mikkelsons were found to be two of the most politically balanced people out there. David is a former Republican turned independent, while Barbara is a Canadian who can’t vote in US elections.

There is just no truth to the idea that Snopes has a political agenda. The only agenda it truly has is to inform their readers and to fight to discover the truth. That is called journalism and is the only thing that keeps our society from devolving into a PR run puffery state.

Of course, there is little hope that people that deny Snopes will be able to believe this fact check either.

That is why people like Donald Trump are able to rise: large swaths of America live in their own fact bubbles. And that is a serious problem that this election will surely not fix.

“America’s Already Great”: What It’s Like To Be Roughed Up By Trump Thugs

Three weeks out from the first votes of the 2016 presidential election, Republican front-runner Donald Trump is better-positioned than ever to win his party’s nomination.

Dismissed as little more than a sideshow just a few months ago, the long-predicted Trump collapse has failed to materialize, and political professionals increasingly view Trump as a possible, perhaps even likely, general election candidate.

The magnate attributes his success to support from a “silent majority,” but Trump backers are neither.

Earlier this week, fed up with Trump’s hateful rhetoric, I traveled to Lowell, MA to protest at a Trump rally.

What I saw horrified me. The crowd packed into the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell resembled nothing so much as a physical manifestation of blinding rage.

Generally speaking, people waiting to enter a political rally are happy and excited, eager to see their favorite candidate. But from the moment I encountered them, Trump supporters seemed to wear a permanent scowl, trading dim-witted barbs about “libtards” and other enemies.

Countless numbers wore shirts attacking Hillary Clinton, often reading “Hillary for Prison 2016.”

Once inside, as we waited for the rally to begin, an announcement played over the PA asking rally attendees to refrain from attacking people who disagreed with Trump. Folks around me laughed menacingly, and remarked that the Trump campaign was asking too much.

But I had no idea what I was in for when a few minutes into Trump’s rambling speech, I held up a sign reading “America’s Already Great.”

It didn’t take long for the glowering people around me to take issue with my sign. A nasal voice behind me told me to put down my sign or else.

I turned to ask the voice’s source, a balding, fat man older than my father, if he disagreed with my sign—which again, contended that America is already a great country.

“You think America’s not great?” I asked. “You think I should hurt you?” he responded.

Things went downhill from there.

Another man, who could have been the goatee-clad brother of my first critic, told me “You’re at a Trump rally? Ditch those,” referring to my sign. “Do you disagree with this?” I shot back. “Yeah. Ditch ’em,” he responded, and at that moment, both of the men grabbed for my sign and tore it up.

The crowd around me began to loudly call for my removal, which was shortly accomplished (although not before the first man hit me on the head and tried to grab me).

The next day, a video of the encounter shot by a friend of mine who’d accompanied me, went viral, and in the days since I’ve become even more familiar with the special brand of thuggery and intimidation Trump’s supporters practice.

My family and I received death threats, and messages poured in calling me every name in the book (although typically, the names were misspelled).

If this was an isolated incident, it would be awful, but it wouldn’t have any greater meaning.

But I’m sad to say my experience is part of a pattern.

Trump is running a campaign fueled by the anger of poorly educated, racist white people, the kind of people who love to criticize “PC culture,” but became offended to the point of violence when I held a sign asserting that ours is a great country.

And as Trump soars in the polls, these people are becoming emboldened. The billionaire blowhard has convinced millions of Americans that not only is their bigoted hatred of Mexicans, Muslims, African-Americans and others justified, but that it is the key to making America “great again,” as if it wasn’t great already.

It’s possible that Trump’s fall, so long awaited, will finally come. I certainly hope so. But Trump’s political demise will not undo the damage he has done to our politics, or to America’s reputation in the world.
